testing... testing ... can you still hear me blogger...over ? It feels like far too long since I posted anything on my blogger blog. I've come to the conclusion it's daft to run both a regular blogger and a tumblr for my illustrated ramblings so, sad though it is as I've been on blogger since 2007, I'm going to mothball this blogger site and focus my blogging attentions over onto my tumblr and my new look website at www.mattdawsonillustration.com. My old website url www.matt-dawson.co.uk will also link to my new website, just to make it all the easier to find me. Now it's not the end. I'll still check in on the old blogger and, who knows, maybe I'll pull off the dustsheets and take it for a spin from time to time. For now though please frequent mattdawsonblog.tumblr.com if you'd like to keep up to date with my latest work. Speaking of latest work, the dodo is a clue... why not pop on over to tumblr and have a gander (wait, that's geese not dodos isn't it...)!

matt dawsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06290520346352238280noreply@blogger.com120tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1138353765082573154.post-22895525470414283802016-05-08T14:29:00.001+01:002016-05-08T14:29:40.345+01:00Nikola Tesla sketch

I would have thought marking the anniversary of his birth was more uplifting... but there you go. What with everything bard I couldn't help but doodle this, just to see what I ended up with. Interestingly, while doing a quick google image search I happened upon some research that suggested Shakespeare may very well have had a bone tumour in his skull which could explain some of the unusual proportions seen in the most famous engraving of the chap on the title page of his first folio. I might have over emphasized this in my sketch, just a little... I also had a bit of fun with the 17th century practice of letter f's (actually "long s's" I learned) instead of s's (only seen with letter s's within words apparently...). Don't know if "toast" was really an appropriate word to use about his "demise" but I needed some s's.
I've illustrated my take on the fictional, sinister beverage "Life Cry" that appeared in the show but another subject I wanted to tackle was the dilapidated shop front that appeared in the show's titles.

A few weeks back I had some time to kill in London so I thought I'd go on a comedy pilgrimage of sorts and check out the exterior shooting location they actually used for the show (a real bookshop in Bloomsbury called Collinge & Clark). It's an odd experience, kind of like stepping into the TV itself, to find yourself standing in front of a fictional location you're very familiar with. Once I'd stood in front of Bernard's shop I wanted to draw it even more.

For a while now I've been reading up on the work of the British painter & illustrator Eric Ravilious. One of his sets of prints form the illustrations for a book called High Street, and one print I'm particularly fond of is the quirky and beautiful submarine engineers. Now I'm wholly not sure why but I thought that this high street shop seemed a good match for the Black Books bookshop and I wanted to approach my illustration with a nod to how Ravilious had treated his submarine engineers. As it would turn out I couldn't help but stray farther and farther from his style as I went on but it was good to have Ravilious and his colour separations in mind as I went along.

I hadn't intended too but I also incorporated several hand lettered lines of dialogue from the show (all text is copyright the estimable Dylan Moran) that referenced the shop itself. It seemed appropriate.

Long story (and too many links) short here's what I ended up with. Now go watch Black Books!
A few variations sprung to mind (which I still might do when I have a quiet day) but "Joseph's technicolour speed boat" won out. I think it's the retro children's book vibe that's entertaining me as much as the silly word play. Might I have been more religiously inclined if R.E lessons at school had jokey illustrations as an accompaniment... probably not. Would have been more entertaining though.

Twas the night before Newtonmas and all through the lab

not a creature was stirring, not even the lab crab (...crustacean experiments?).

The white coats were hung by the black board with care

in hopes that old Isaac soon would be there.

And then from outside peering in through the dark

The bewigged face of jolly Isaark (...?!).

He swung in through the window with haste and alacrity

His motion directed by the force of gravity.

OK, OK... I won't do anymore. I'll just end by saying happy Newtonmas to all and to all a good-night!

Like with the rhino, I didn't have a strong plan of attack, just to use only one egg box for the whole thing, make use of the existing moulded forms where I could and see what happened. I'm particularly surprised and happy with the heavily lidded eyes (which weren't added as separate pieces but are part of the trunk sections). Now, I'm sure there's a egg box hippo to be had as well...
I wouldn't go so far as to say this is going to be a running theme... I'm just really enjoying researching and illustrating some of the more obscure members of our extended primate family. Today's relative, the Golden snub-nosed monkey. matt dawsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06290520346352238280noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1138353765082573154.post-43625717205967147302015-06-28T11:43:00.000+01:002015-07-13T20:22:22.816+01:00Primate Family Portraits. I've always had more than a passing penchant for all things primate. It's a remarkable thing to look at such a menagerie as you find in the various branches of our primate family tree and know that we are a part of all that (kinda like meeting long lost relatives at a wedding...). One such remarkable relative is the Aye-aye. matt dawsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06290520346352238280noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1138353765082573154.post-11132325848444912532015-04-21T21:01:00.000+01:002015-04-21T21:01:13.761+01:00Black Books booze...
A couple of my very good friends had birthdays in close succession recently and, as we all share a love of the estimable Dylan Moran's superb channel 4 comedy series Black Books, I made them both my take on a bottle of the drink Life Cry which features briefly in the episode titled Elephants and Hens (the only playable link I could find on youtube is speeded up and cropped, so part of the bottle label is missing, still, you can get the idea if you jump to 3 min 25 seconds in). On the show Life Cry would appear to be a budget, rough, alcopopish beverage best avoided but I hypothesized its makers had relaunched it for a trendier 21st century market. Fans of the show might get some of the references I included on the back label and, if you haven't seen Black Books yet... what's keeping you ?! I cannot recommend it strongly enough. "You always know you're in for a good night when there's a polar bear bleeding on the label." Still working on, for now, 'keep it under the hat' stuff. Here's some sketches that hint at aspects of the project. There's something about drawing spacesuits that I just find highly enjoyable so, when I arrived at the notion of a "poncho spaceman" with a mate last week, and then that mate had his birthday this week, this drawing for a card was the result.matt dawsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06290520346352238280noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1138353765082573154.post-18988219442178792292015-03-07T14:12:00.001+00:002015-03-07T14:13:50.069+00:00surplus neanderthals... Well you would be forgiven for thinking I'd dropped off the face of the earth but I've been busy with some exciting projects and won't have anything I can show for a while save occasional sketch crumbs which fall from the drawing board. The first scattering take the form of neanderthal portraits which, although the wrong flavour for the project in question, had a little something I really liked.matt dawsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06290520346352238280noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1138353765082573154.post-55754127971695478872015-01-11T16:08:00.001+00:002015-01-12T19:30:31.012+00:00merch for the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation with my little, orange fellows on it...Happy 2015 everyone! It's nice to be able to start the cold and shivering blog year on a warm and fuzzy orange note and finally share photos of some goodies I received through the post.

Towards the end of last year I was approached by The Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation as they'd seen a couple (one and two) of my little, orange fellows on the web and wondered if I'd be willing to donate merchandising use of them for T-shirts and the like. Well, if you look back through my blog it would become evident I've got more than a passing soft spot for all things primate so I was very happy to be able to help the BOSF in their worthy work. I'm no expert but sadly, as with other urgent charitable causes, there is a real need to be answered and many devoted and hard working individuals who need the support. If you can spare the time I know these lovely folks (and the hairy, orange guys and gals they care for) would appreciate your interest.

I'm not sure of the ins and outs in getting hold of these BOSF products from countries other than Indonesia but I would suggest a visit to their web shop and in working with them I've found them to be very friendly and eager to help.
Deck the halls with prisms and apples fa la la la laaah...Well it's that most wonderful time of the year when all those so inclined celebrate the mind (though perhaps not the personality) of Isaac the birthday boy. I don't know at what point something becomes a tradition but as this is my third Newtonmas card (see the others here and here) I'm going to call this a tradition of mine.

Raise a glass of spiced cider and don't forget the apple on top of your Newtonmas tree this year. Warmest compliments of the season and a very happy new year to everyone!
I'm led to believe there is a Mammoth Free Museum Weekend at Torquay Museum this weekend along with a special prize draw, for which I've been asked to doodle a couple of mammoths as prizes (so long as the post arrives in time). Very relaxing drawing mammoths. Nice and scribbley! Sadly I'm too far from Torquay this weekend otherwise it sounded like a fun old time !
One such commission was for the grand folks at Storytime magazine who kindly asked me to provide illustrations for the Aesops fable of the dog and his bone (a.k.a the dog and his reflection) for their November issue. Y'know the story; dog finds bone, dog happy with bone, dog sees his reflection with said bone in the river and thinks it's another dog with a better bone, so dog goes to bark at this 'new' bone owner and nab the better bone... What do you know, dog loses his bone in the river... The moral of this fable, avoid rivers!

I pitched three different dog characters (named Sniffer, Banger and Spot... for ease of distinguishing them apart) for Storytime to choose between. Most gratifyingly, after the story was illustrated, they asked for a further group illustration of all three dogs (plus heads and a bone icon) to use for a game page to accompany the original story. All in all a very rewarding brief to work on.

I must say it's great to see the modus operandi Storytime have adopted for themselves, commissioning a variety of distinctly different illustrators to accompany a stimulating mix of story content in a well designed and produced quality magazine for children. Long may it continue.
I believe they are even setting up a name the mammoth competition on their facebook page very soon. I'll be interested to find out what name he / she is. Very nice to see the hirsute old fella / fellaess out and about (although he / she still looks a bit bemused by all the attention he / she is getting!)...
