Bleriot in progress...

To keep the blog from withering away here's the rough cobbled together sketch/colour study for the next Bleriot. Unconventionally I've been working backwards with my sequence of illustrations... in my world Bleriot appears to be making his journey from mid channel to France flying in reverse! I'm not completely happy with this illustration as it stands so far. One reason for this Bleriot project of mine is to concentrate on the weak areas in my work... namely depicting women and crowds!

It's great, nicely handled and the characters are brilliant... I think you just need a couple more of them in there to really make it a crowd scene!

I found in the crowd scene I've done recently, as much as I hated doing it, the trick is to overlap your characters... the good thing about that is you don't have to do full figures!

Maybe, a lady hidden by a parasol behind the man who looks like Beaker with a moustache and if top-hats are the right period you could have a short man obscure the right leg of the photographer (maybe he could have a tall wife with big feather rimmed hat?)

I hope that helps, if not, they're just suggestions, feel free to ignore me...

I love the slight LS Lowry quality you have in there too. I've e-mailed you a Lowry fairground scene that might help also...

I don't think your women are a weak point, nor your crowds for that matter. Overlapping characters would certainly enhanced the 'crowdedness' of the scene. If the finished piece is similar to this, it'll be successful.

Hey,

The Bleirot work is coming along great, it reminds me a bit of Scott Campbells stuff ... http://scott-c.blogspot.com

I definitely dont think that women are your weak point, all the characters in this piece (includng the women) are nicely executed and interesting to look giving the eye plenty of interesting little details to check out.
As for the crowd maybe a couple more people overlapping here and there to fill the space up along the bottom and right-hand borders.

Look forward to seeing more.
Cheers.

Beautiful sketch-- really love the character and where you're headed. The 'bon voyage' final is just fantastic.

Cheers,

Your style is lovely, I love the way the figures are cropped. I read the first comment and I get nervous about putting a thing in front of another thing...spatial relations quandary. I love the man in the plane in the fog.
